For a man maxbet famous for his single-mindedness and ambition, Steven Gerrard could have been forgiven for a rethink, in view of his prospective employer's fresh capitulation.

Given the absolute dissolution of Rangers, scorched 5-0 in the Parkhead sun as Celtic coasted to a seventh successive Scottish title, you could hardly blame the Liverpool legend for having second thoughts.

The sea-change from the comfort zone of youth coaching to inheriting a sour atmosphere at Ibrox is currently a subject of intense consideration for Gerrard.

Rangers' deficiencies, under hapless interim coach Graeme Murty, were brutally exposed by Brendan Rodgers' men yesterday. The Light Blues have levelled with Gerrard, in terms of prospects, budget and how they envisage the future.

Chairman Dave King, after months of secret lobbying to entice Gerrard to what would be an astonishing chapter in Scottish football, must be hoping this is the dark hour before the dawn.

What is completely obvious about contemporary Old Firm encounters is Celtic's utter dominance. Even in Jock Stein's nine-in-a-row era for Celtic and that of Walter Smith at Ibrox in the 1990s, the derbies remained ultra-competitive affairs. Rangers, under Murty, and Pedro Caixinha before him, have abandoned even the pretence of agitation.

Having hoped for progress with project-style bosses in Mark Warburton and Caixinha, the Gerrard alliance is one, above all, for maximum impact. Commercial advantages allied to his name alone will be a bonus, but Rangers need immediate coaxing back into shape.

In his autobiography, Gerrard speaks of looking at Bill Shankly's famous statue outside the Kop. As he considers this next, dramatic, shift, he is sure to be guided by one of the Scots' memorable proclamations: 'If you are first, you are first. If you are second, you are nothing'.

Now we know Gerrard, for all his supreme leadership, never did win a Premier League with Liverpool. Can he, against mountainous odds, orchestrate a power swing in Glasgow?

The Rangers manager-elect is going to require every fibre of drive that single-handedly dragged maxbet the Reds to Champions League glory in 2005. And then some. Unfortunately for the Gers, he is too old to influence matters on the pitch.

The aura that lifted Shankly from Glenbuck in Ayrshire to revolutionising Liverpool, is the sort of fanciful story Rangers dream Gerrard can somehow construct by sheer force of will.

As ever, money - a fair chunk of it and smart investment on players - is central to any hope of Gerrard dislodging his former Anfield boss Rodgers, if Rangers are to stop Celtic's frenetic march to ten-in-a-row.

An estimated £15-20m needs to be measured against the Hoops' much superior resources, courtesy of Champions League income. Those Rangers fans on board with this proposal hope Gerrard's presence will hurdle financial reality. Tactical acumen, a solid defence, increased athleticism, identifying talent - maybe even winning inevitable mind games with Rodgers - would be a start.

The excessive demands and silverware which adorn Rangers' proud history is likely to be something that has intrigued Gerrard from the outset.

Can the Light Blues now entice better quality? Across the city, Rodgers has fine-tuned strikers Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard. The Gerrard 'brand' could be the difference between recruiting similar.

In assessing the Ibrox scene, Gerrard will be just as interested in individuals' mentality. His own, occasional, dissatisfaction with his Anfield contribution under ex-manager Rafa Benitez - incredible as that seems - stemmed from a certain frostiness from the Spaniard towards his club captain.

The Benitez style of communication took shape more in the form of the tactics board than an arm around the shoulder. The latter approach will be required by Gerrard, in order to motivate a Rangers squad, significantly low in confidence.

In this, Gerrard has plenty of experience, knowing how to relate to differing personalities at Anfield, where, in his book, he speaks of leaving some, like Luis Suarez, to their own confident devices, while encouraging Daniel Sturridge, a player needing reassurance. At least there is no question that those at Ibrox, from one-time Liverpool prodigy Jordan Rossiter, now recovered from injury, to veteran Portugal defender Bruno Alves, will be boosted when Gerrard walks in.

Ultimately, it's impossible to accuse Gerrard of shirking a challenge here. Then again, maxbet when you view a colossal career of elite, on-field leadership at Liverpool, it's probably not surprising.
